The Industrial Hygienist III will perform activities and tasks in support of characterization and environmental restoration of hazardous and radioactive waste sites.

General Responsibilities and Knowledge Skills:

The Industrial Hygienist III (IH) is responsible for industrial hygiene, safety planning, and technical support for the functional group and projects, as assigned.

  • Under limited supervision, plans and manages health and safety programs and policies that address occupational hazards and diseases in the work environment.
  • Develops and implements procedures for monitoring and preventing chemical, physical and biological hazards at a site or facility.
  • Anticipates, recognizes, evaluates, and controls chemical substances, physical agents, and biological hazards, and makes recommendations to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Performs field and safety measurements, facility characterization sampling, safety evaluations, and hazardous waste evaluations.
  • Surveys, compiles, and analyzes data relating to occupational and environmental health issues, such as chemical exposure, radiation, smoke, fumes, noise, temperature, dusts, vapors, mists, gases, solvents, lighting, and ergonomics that are known or suspected of being real or potential detriments to health.
  • Establishes and reviews needed program documents to plan, implement and evaluate the industrial hygiene activities.
  • Establishes hazard and risk analysis criteria and issues appropriate documents that adequately identify site hazards and needed controls.
  • Reviews plans, procedures, design specifications and modifications to ensure industrial hygiene concerns are identified and mitigated.
  • Investigates overexposure, accidents and deviations from approved industrial hygiene practices and assists in the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Interacts with the Company's occupational health provider relative to medical concerns and worker exposures.
  • Determines exposure sampling criteria and operating procedures that guide the industrial hygiene program and field operations.
  • Develops and provides input to hazardous material communications, including maintaining material data sheets.
  • Monitors the Company's health standards in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Provides guidance to the Company on compliance with industrial hygiene requirements and interacts with regulators.
  • Develops and facilitates training for workers on issues related to health and safety.
  • Trains and mentor's more junior staff.
  • May develop and lead medium to large-sized projects.
  • In addition, reports to the project Health and Safety Manager and may be directed to serve as a delegate for field occupational safety oversight.

Specific Responsibilities and Knowledge/Skills:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles, concepts, and techniques in Industrial Hygiene, including use of various sampling and analysis methods, personal exposure monitoring, safety program development, and related recordkeeping. Must be familiar with OSHA, EPA and all other Federal, state and local health regulations.
  • Skill and ability to perform highly complex and critical tasks and to solve complex problems.
  • Ability to have major impact on organizational success and productivity, with considerable latitude for independent judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at the highest levels.
  • Ability to lead substantial proposals and marketing initiatives.
  • Ability to develop and lead large sized projects, including defining scope, objectives, and methods.

  • Possesses the level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Act as a content expert and/or internal consultant applying leadership and functional expertise for the area of designated responsibility.
  • Act with fiduciary responsibility towards contractual deliverables, cost consciousness and corporate goals.
  • Follow or set a strategy & goals for the work group and review results.
  • Plan, organize and assign skill specific work to staff or people performing similar or related functions. May set goals and determine individual training and coaching needs.
  • May have direct reports. May provide feedback to others on individual deliverables.
  • May be assigned to project teams.
Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene and at least 5 years' experience.
  • Certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene as a Certified Industrial Hygienist or Certified Associate Industrial Hygienist is preferred.
  • Certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals as CSP is preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent communication, organization and problem-solving skills required.

Working Conditions:
  • When working at the DOE Facility, Molasky Building work is primarily office support, work performed at the NNSS the work is primarily field related where physical effort may be required, up to and not limited to lifting, bending, reaching, standing, and walking for long periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to wear personal protective equipment and to work in remote, desert environments.
