Navarro Research and Engineering is hiring a Geologist III, in Las Vegas, NV.

The Geologist III performs activities and tasks in support of characterization, groundwater sampling, drilling, geologic and hydrogeologic interpretation and environmental restoration of hazardous and radioactive waste sites located at the Nevada National Security Site.

General Responsibilities and Knowledge

  • Under general supervision and guidance has the skill and ability to perform moderately complex professional tasks.
  • Ability to organize own work independently in order to meet established objectives, using discretion in performing duties.
  • Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential function.
  • Ensures documents are clear, concise, and conform to regulatory and technical requirements.
  • Must be able to contribute to a positive work environment and participate in a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to document and record work activities as appropriate.
  • Works to assigned procedures.

Specific Responsibilities and Knowledge/Sills

  • Knowledge of fundamental principles, concepts and techniques in geology and hydrology with volcanic rocks and geologic settings is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with geologic hydrogeologic data collection and interpretation.
  • Responsibilities encompass a variety of tasks that may include both office and field work.
  • Ability to conduct historical research as required by the assigned work activities. Research may include but is not limited to historical documents, engineering drawings, geologic maps, cross sections, reports.
  • Field work to the NNSS will be required to support assigned work activities. Field activities may include visual surveys for field sites, water level measurement in wells, groundwater sampling, collection and interpretation of drill cuttings, geologic mapping and interpretation, knowledge of groundwater characterization and analysis, water quality measurements (pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity), and installation of instrumentation in wells for the collection of data using various sensors and data loggers.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in geology or geological sciences other geologic technical discipline and 5 years of experience in the environmental, mining, or petroleum industry.
  • Fundamental knowledge of mathematics and science.
  • Fundamental computer skills including knowledge of computer software including Microsoft and Adobe products.
  • Possess or ability to meet minimum safety training requirements including such as OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER, Rad Work II, etc.
  • Department of Energy or other Federal Government facility experience is desirable.

Working Conditions

  • Primary duty station will be in Mercury, NV located about 70 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Secondary duty station will be located in a DOE Molasky Building facility in downtown Las Vegas.
  • When working at the DOE Facility at the Molasky Building the work is primarily office and office support.
  • Field work based out of Mercury NV typically requires a 10-hour day, 4 days per week. The workday begins when the staff member arrives in Mercury and ends when they depart Mercury for the day. (Employees receive a daily stipend of $55 for days worked in the field)
  • When conducting work in the field, physical effort is required, up to and not limited to lifting, bending, reaching, standing and walking for long periods of time.
  • Frequently requires daily travel and performing work at remote locations.
  • Overtime and shift work may be required to complete assigned task especially during drilling and aquifer testing operations.
